Get Motivated to Reach Spanish Fluency: If not now, when?

Imagine your life as a fluent Spanish speaker.

You could connect with people you see every day. You could travel to Mexico and chat easily with the locals. If you’re a community leader, you could have the impact you dream of.

If you’re ready to finally learn Spanish this year – Focus. Your. Efforts. Dabbling in Duolingo will not make you a confident Spanish speaker. Dedicating the time to study 1:1 with one of our highly-trained teachers and wholeheartedly following their guidance to make Spanish part of your everyday life will make you a confident Spanish speaker and equip you to use your Spanish to enact social change.

While becoming a student really is as easy as saying “YES, I’m ready to start Spanish classes!” and enrolling in our program, we recognize that it shouldn’t be a snap decision.

Perhaps now isn’t the right time.

You get out of your Spanish journey what you put into it. If you’re not ready to prioritize learning Spanish right now then you should wait to begin.

Something does have to change, though. Or else you’ll wake up tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, and you still “don’t have time to learn Spanish right now”.

Here are our best tips for getting yourself ready to learn Spanish:

  1. Set a start date goal. Choose a date on the calendar that marks your limit – you are not going to wait any longer than this day to start Spanish lessons. Create an event in your calendar to make it tangible and real!

  2. Stay connected to your motivation. Until that start date, make sure you are staying rooted in your personal motivation for learning Spanish. Ask yourself: Why is learning Spanish so important to me? Many students resonate with our mission to use Spanish to create a more just society for Latinx immigrants. Write your answer in the description section of your calendar event to remind yourself why you set your target start date.

  3. Recognize the urgency. There is a social crisis happening in California right this minute. Look at our borders. There is a cultural divide in our country, and immigrants are continually misunderstood and mistreated. We believe there is a beautiful piece to the solution: learning Spanish. Spanish is an avenue to cultural awareness and helps us understand the experience of immigrants firsthand. The future of our country is bilingual English/Spanish. Are we going to build a shared future? Are you going to be a part of the solution?

  4. Honor your commitment. When your target start date arrives, you’re likely still going to feel like you don’t have time. Start anyway. You will make the time and you will learn Spanish. It can be done! The future of our society and the life you envision for yourself depend on it!

Learning Spanish is more than a bullet to add to your resume. If you value social justice for Latinx immigrants and living in an inclusive community, learning Spanish is an essential action. It’s one of the most impactful ways to live your values.

If you’re not going to start Spanish lessons now, then when?
